These are some of the most common questions that you have asked me during my many visits to schools. We also collected questions from children in different parts of the world, including Britain, mainland Europe, the United States, Canada, India, China, and Japan. What is intriguing is that wherever you live, very similar questions crop up everywhere.

It is important that you are never embarrassed about not knowing something. By asking a question you do what good scientists do. Scientists see something they don’t understand and pose a question. Then they consult other scientists and search for any knowledge about the subject they can find. Finally, they plan to find an answer by performing an experiment.

What makes

someone a scientist?

People become scientists for many different

reasons. When I was 8, I wanted to learn how things

worked and tried experiments, which mostly failed.

T his could be frustrating but was also fun. When I was

older, I saw the exquisite beauty of plant and animal

tissues through a microscope. At 14 I made a telescope

and saw planets and craters on the moon. When I was 16,

I finally made a radio that didn’t actually catch fire

when I turned it on. In college I saw that science

was not just interesting. I learned its value to

do immense good in all walks of life.

Can we ever

be 100% sure?

I don’t think so. In fact, I think it is better

to be unsure, even when you think you have what

looks like proof of something. And to my mind, the

more science we do, the more we find out

about what we don’t know. Not being sure is

why we do science.
